Adults with developmental disabilities and their caregivers share stories about their interactions with healthcare professionals. Viewers gain perspective and recognize behaviors that improve communication, heighten satisfaction, and build strong connections with patients. Dr. Katie Neuendorf, sister of a featured patient, shares her personal insight about how providers may enhance these encounters.

RaffertyWeiss produced this national people with disabilities video for the US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment. The public service announcement features youth and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. The message shows that people with disabilities can perform if they are given a chance and because someone in their life told them they could achieve something. We shot at multiple locations around the DC area. Always proud to produce these PSAs and try to raise the awareness about people with disabilities.

Persons with disabilities are more likely than others to experience adverse socioeconomic, such as less education, poorer health, fewer employment opportunities, and higher poverty rates. To end poverty and boost shared prosperity, we must leave no one behind. At the World Bank, we’re working to build inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities for all by breaking down barriers to full social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities. A German university is training people who have mental disabilities or learning difficulties to become teachers. Those who complete the program will bring to their new profession a unique perspective based on their individual disability. A German university has developed a program that trains people who have mental disabilities or learning difficulties to become teachers — in areas that include social studies, medicine, design, and architecture. Those who complete the program will bring to the teaching profession a unique perspective that’s based on their individual disability. Our report follows seven men and women through the training program, which is sponsored by the Institute for Inclusive Education at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. All seven have worked at other jobs, but felt that they were not living up to their full potential. This program is aimed at helping them to do just that. If they complete the training program, they will be hired as “education specialists,” and offered employment contracts similar to those of university lecturers or assistant professors. We’ll find out whether the program will improve the participants’ self-esteem, how they cope with the stress of learning a new profession, and whether they are accepted by their fellow students at the university.

Art Enables helps artists with special needs create and sell their artwork. Only 20% of people with disabilities participate in the workforce. This program counters that by providing both an art studio for people with disabilities to make art and career and vocational training to market and sell their artwork. It helps these artists express themselves creatively, socialize, and earn flexible income to increase their independence and build careers. In our Art Enables documentary, we talk with some of the artists about their experiences as well as people running the program. Art Enables is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC and can be found online at https://art-enables.org/

You can take a wheelchair just about anywhere. Amy addresses societal perceptions of disability and her vision for how we all change the way we approach disability. Amy has been a wheelchair user for the past ten years; she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes weak tissues, joint dislocation, chronic pain and fatigue. In spite of this, Amy lives an exciting and hugely positive life, travelling the world, working as a graphic designer for a charity and campaigning to change the way society understands disability. Most recently, Amy has published for Buzzfeed on her three-month adventure around South East Asia, writing about, filming, and photo-documenting her experiences in her wheelchair.
